We can’t call ourselves a “clever country” if we fail to value and support medicine and science properly.

Right now, the Government is starving medical research of full funding, even as it claims that science and research are national priorities. If our leaders truly value science as much as they say, then they must back their words with action—and fund it properly.

We’ve seen what happens when governments neglect science—like the Trump administration gutting medical research funding and dismantling the US Center for Disease Control. We can’t afford to let that happen in Australia.

As someone who values the incredible innovation and lifesaving work of Australia’s medical researchers, I’m calling on the Federal Government to release the full $1 billion annual disbursement from the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) in the 2026–27 Federal Budget.

Right now, only $650 million is being released each year—leaving lifesaving medical research starved of its true potential. The MRFF was designed to guarantee sustainable funding for Australian medical research. Arbitrarily capping its spending puts discoveries at risk and jeopardizes the future of Australian jobs and innovation.

We’ve seen what happens when research funding falters overseas—talented and skilled people move to countries where they’ll be appreciated and supported. We can’t afford a brain drain like that from Australia.

Fully releasing MRFF allocations every year will:

Drive economic growth and strengthen Australia’s position as a global leader in medical research.

Keep our researchers working on groundbreaking cures and treatments for Australians in Australia.

Protect jobs and ensure vital research projects aren’t abandoned.

Australia prides itself on being a clever country. But without proper support our research institutes will close, jobs will be lost, vital breakthroughs will never get off the ground, and our health will suffer.
